The 2017 Cabrinha Contra is Cabrinha's performance light wind offering, and you can bet it's a winner.  Here is an area of kiteboarding that has been receiving a lot of attention in recent years and for a good reason.  We aren't all blessed to live in a place that gets regular wind near or above 20 knots, in fact, many of us have to contend with 10-knot winds way more often than is healthy for our daily allowance of stoke.  But take heart, getting skunked or just having another mediocre session doesn't have to be your bane any longer.  Cabrinha is renowned for the efficiency of their kites, and this one has been specifically designed to perform in the most minimal of winds.  At the end of the day, that's a significant distinction, the Contra doesn't just fly in light wind, it performs.

The 2017 Cabrinha Contra has been expanded this year to include a 19-meter offering, adding to the 13m, 15m, and 17m available last year.  With one of these big boys, no matter how disappointing the wind may be for everyone else you won't be one of that sad lot.  Bringing to bear Cabrinha's vast experience making kites, the Contra is all about making the most of the least.  For a kite to not just fly but perform in light winds, it can't afford to get anything wrong.  It's got to be light, efficient, and fast turning, all of which won't do much for you if it doesn't relaunch like a champ.  And that is exactly what is at the heart of the Contra's success, and it hits each of these critical criteria smack on the head.

Changes to last years Contra include giving the Contra a slightly higher aspect ratio so that it flies both further forward and with more lift, slightly thinner struts, and improvements to it's turning speed.   Further contributing to the 2017 Cabrinha Contra's efficiency is Cabrinha's  "Pure Profile Panels"  construction which gives the designers more precise control of the canopy shape.  Each segment of the leading edge corresponds to two panels of the canopy resulting in what Cabrinha calls "curvature control" and thus a more efficient and more powerful kite.   There is also rear line tuning options whereby the rider can adjust the kites bar pressure, depower, and power of the kite to their preference.

If you want to spend more time on the water, not just riding but rocking hooked and unhooked tricks, boosting big floaty jumps and ripping up smooth waves even before they get wind textured, well, get the 2017 Cabrinha Contra.   The difference between a kite that flies in light wind and one that performs in light wind is what makes the Contra a worthy addition to your quiver.

Riding the Contra 17m with a foil in 5-20 side off wind Review by Yani
I had a chance to bring a 17m Contra home for a test ride, and even though the wind was a bit sketchy (side off and dirty), I took it for a go with my foil board. The first thing I can say about the 17m Contra is it is big. Of course any 17m kite is by definition big, but the Contra seemed an order larger than I expected due to its enormous leading edge circumference. No kidding, this kite is an airship, and be warned, it takes a lot of pumping to bring it up to pressure. Once I got it pumped up and launched, the first thing that I noticed is that it is very stable. On the beach the wind was super patchy with big empty holes. The Contra handled it like a champ. It can stay up with very little wind and drifts nicely when the lines go slack. Once I got out into the water and the wind began to fill in a bit, I had some trepidation that I would have too much kite in the near 20 knot gusts for my 140 lbs. I've only been foiling since July of 2016, so I still get butterflies when I go out, especially when I have more power than needed. So, I was pleasantly surprised that it depowers as well as it does. Cranking down the depower strap allowed me to dump enough power to make for a really fun and in control session. It has a lot of power and an equal amount of depower. Flying the Conta, I was also impressed by the "Pure Profile Panels" which Cabrinha says gives the kite a more exact canopy contour. It did indeed look more purposefully shaped with it's many long thin canopy panels than what can be accomplished with fewer larger canopy panels. I'm sure the PPP tech was very much at play when the kite was powered up as well, but it was more visually apparent when pushing the bar away. The way the kite luffed was visibly consistent and even across the whole canopy. This is definitely a well designed light wind kite and it has enough higher end wind range to keep you on the water as the wind picks up. All in all, I was very happy with the Contra. This is a good solid light wind kite that turns fast for its size, flies efficiently and stably, drifts great, relaunches well, has great depower.
