The 2017 Cabrinha Drifter is in its 6th year since pioneering the ultimate dedicated wave kite with its signature "slack line drift". As with all of Cabrinha's kites, the Drifter has undergone tweaks over the years in pursuit of perfection. This year, the Drifter continues its trajectory towards supremacy with yet another innovative feature, onshore and offshore front line attachment options. Without any doubt, the Drifter remains at the top of its class boasting multiple World Tour Kitesurfing Wave Championship titles in both men's and women's groups. Let's take a closer look at what makes the Drifter the king of the waves.
There are certain characteristics that are essential to kiting in the waves. First of all, an able wave kite is one that has excellent power on demand, and just as importantly, great depower on demand. You want to be able to use the kite to line up the wave or power through to the next section. Once on the wave, now you want to be able to switch the kite off so you can ride using the power of the wave. Check; the 2017 Cabrinha Drifter has sick on demand power as well as depower. Next, you want a wave kite to turn on a dime. Wave kiting is all about being able to put the kite where you want it so that you can ride the wave without negative influence from the kite. For example, you don't want the kite to be pulling you back while you are doing your bottom turn, or pulling you off the wave while doing your top turn. Check; the 2017 Cabrinha Drifter's maneuverability remains legendary. Next, a good wave kite must have good "slack line drift". Here, the idea is that once you are on the wave, you want to be able to ride towards the kite without causing the kite to fall out of the sky. It's ability to continue to fly down wind even as the lines go slack is why the Drifter is called the Drifter. Lastly, if you drop your kite in the waves, you want to be able to relaunch it before the next wave comes. With Cabrinha's Dynamic Arc, the Drifter opens up when it is on the water so you can get it back in the air lighting fast. Check, Check, Check and Check!
In 2017, the Cabrinha Drifter's bridle has been updated to make the kite sit a little further back in the window and it's canopy has been updated to be slightly lower aspect. This allows the Drifter to have more grunt without limiting its ability to dump the power when needed. The Drifter has also been updated with onshore and offshore front line attachment options which let you tune the kite to sit further forward or back in the window depending on the wind direction. This feature, in conjunction with the bridle and canopy, has the effect of making the Drifter at once more surf specific and more versatile. The standard onshore setting is geared to wave kiting in the vast majority of conditions, however, not only does the offshore setting make the Drifter perform better in offshore conditions, it also makes the Drifter a good freeride kite with improved upwind ability.
The bottom line is this... The 2017 Cabrinha Drifter is the penultimate wave kite with huge wind range, power and depower on demand, super fast turning, feather-like drift, excellent relaunch, and tuning options to make it both a better wave kite and a mighty fine freeride kite too. Enjoy!
