The 2017 Liquid Force Space Craft is one of the coolest new boards of the year. One look will bring back memories of the mutant boards from the early days of kiteboarding but, while the Space Craft is in part mutant-inspired, there is more going on here than initially meets the eye. Let's check it out.
The Space Craft's genesis is derived more from snowboarding than the mutant tech of years past. Coming off the water on a particularly windy day on the Hood River, Jason Slezak and Gary Siskar from Liquid Force wondered why a kiteboard couldn't have the feel of a modern directional snowboard. After all, snowboard design has been making some impressive advancements since the last time the mutant idea took shape in kiteboarding. Naturally, they took it as a challenge and began to collaborate on making it so. The object was simple, make a twin tip kiteboard that carves, slashes, and jumps like a directional; a board that is geared for a riders' strong tack while performing well on both.
After giving the idea some good old fashioned R and D, the concept began to take shape. First, they took tried and true rocker lines from other boards in the LF lineup, namely the nose rocker of the Legacy for its freedom and carve ability and the tail rocker of the Drive for its upwind ability and more directional performance. This creates a directional rocker line with more rocker on one end than the other. Next, by shifting the wide point toward the tail, the board develops a longer nose and shorter tail. The guys call this adjustment of the wide point of the board "hippy-tec"... Simply put, the hips of the board are oriented toward the back of the board on the favored tack to give the board a generally directional aptitude. While the Space Craft does slightly favor one tack more than the other, the boards subtly blended outline and rocker allow it to perform well on both tacks.
The Liquid Force 2017 Space Craft is ready to be tuned around your stance with 4-pack inserts and comes with four 4cm fins and two 5cm fins to accommodate your riding style. If you want a kiteboard with a distinct snowboard feel, if you love to carve, rip, slash, and jump, or if you heavily favor one tack over the other, the Space Craft may just be your cosmic soulmate!
