How to Foil Dock Start
Foil Dock Start
Foiling off the dock could be a great alternative to foiling when you can't access to the boat or on days that there isn't any wind or waves. Dock starting isn't as easy as people make it look, but no worry. Our trusted teammate Julien Kepski is here to show you how.
1. Having the right setup
Some may say "used what you got", but there is alway a right tool for the job. having the right tool could save you pain and headache when you are learning or doing the task at hand. Let's talk about the board first for dock starting.
Board
For dock start, a short foil board is the most ideal board. A shorter board allows the nose of the board to clear from the water when pumping.
Mast size
A longer mast of 85cm would be ideal to have enough hight to clear the foil under the dock and allow you to not hunch over as much when doing the run up.
Foil
For the foil wing size will depend on your weight. A Medium to high aspect wing with good pump and glide.
2. Find a Dock
Location, location, location. It probably will be the hardest to come up with. Finding a spot where you could dock start. Best is a floating dock. Watch out for cleats and obstacle surrounding the area.
